Child Life Director - Full Time - Primary Children's Hospital

This position is responsible for providing strategic leadership as well as oversight of daily department activities for the Child Life Department. The Child Life Director will work in partnership with the Family Support Services leadership team, Administrative Council, and other facility and department leaders to ensure the provision of optimal care and service, attainment of financial goals, and the development of staff.
•Reports to the Director of Family Support Services.
•Position oversees ≈ 22 FTEs.
•Partners with Volunteer Director and assists with leadership for 300+ volunteers.
•Budget of ≈ $1 million.
•Responsible for hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and disciplinary action decisions.
1.Develops the strategic direction for Child Life Services based on proven standards of care, collaboration and needs assessment with the hospital’s various department leaders, employee input, and the goals of the hospital for child life.
2.Accountable for the development, implementation, and management of annual capital/operating and personnel (FTE) budget for unit – assuring that an appropriate number of staff and volunteers are available to meet patient needs.
3.Advances clinical excellence through analysis of service metrics defined by national standards/and those developed in-house, quality improvement efforts, clinical supervision, timely feedback, and dedicated processes/opportunities for staff development.
4.Ensures staff incorporate evidence-based practice into all aspects of care and service delivery model and continually monitors respected organizations with similar Child Life services for best practices.
5.Responsible for effective recruitment, onboarding/orientation, training, mentoring, evaluation, and disciplinary action with staff members.
6.Responsible for creating an effective department culture which includes shared decision-making, effective communication, change management, mentoring, and opportunities for continuous professional learning.
7.Manages staff allocation – ensures that a sufficient number of competent staff are available to meet care and service needs. Also manages FTEs to changing census.
8.Ensures appropriate allocation of supplies and resources.
9.Oversees internship program as outlined by the national Child Life Council.
10.Supervises Music Therapy program.
Pay: Based on Experience
•Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (degree will be verified).
•Current professional certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS).
•Must maintain an active affiliation with the National Child Life Council (CLC).
•Five years paid clinical experience in Child Life.
•Demonstrated track record of effective communication skills – in person, via phone, and in writing.
•Program and initiative development, promotion, execution, and assessment (verified through references).
•Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with all stakeholders – staff, administration, patients, families, physicians, clinicians, department leaders, and volunteers.
•Proficient and effective use of computers – email, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation creation.
•Carrying, hearing, listening, pulling/pushing, lifting, seeing sitting, speaking, standing, walking.
Bachelor’s degree specifically in Child Life, Human Development, Psychology or Child Development.
Master’s degree in Child Life, MBA, or MHA.
Prior healthcare/hospital experience in a pediatric facility.
Experience working as a Child Life Director or Manager
