MURRAY, UT – Utahns are invited to get their hearts checked for free as part of the 2013 Community Healthy Heart Fair at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray on Saturday, February 9.

Free EKG screenings, cholesterol and glucose tests, and blood pressure and body fat analysis checks will be performed by specialists from the Intermountain Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center, which is sponsoring the fair.

The heart fair runs from 9 am to 1 pm at Intermountain Medical Center, 5300 South State Street in Murray.

“There will be lots of resources and information available at the fair, so it’s a great opportunity for people to learn how they can take steps to enhance their heart health,” says Donald Lappe, MD, chief of cardiology at the Intermountain Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center.

There will also be free heart-healthy cookbook and cooking demonstrations, physician presentations and workshops, and heart service displays with the latest treatment options and newest cardiac technology. A Life Flight medical helicopter and EMS and fire trucks from Murray City Fire Department will be on display.

Interactive workshops will be held on the following topics:

  • 9 am – How Do Diabetes and Obesity Affect Your Heart? – Kevin Walsh, MD
  • 10:30 am – How Do I Know if I Have a Healthy Heart? – Hannah K. Raasch, MD.
  • Noon — Best and Worst Foods for Your Heart (cooking demonstration) – Jennifer Burns and Amanda Hindoian, RD, CD

The cookbook that will be given away has been reviewed by certified dietitians at the Heart Institute and provides over 50 heart healthy options including heart healthy snacks, appetizers, salads, soups and main dishes. The recipes give great ideas for how to replace unhealthy eating habits, and add in more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains.

Nutrition facts for each recipe are also included in the cookbook. Artwork, including the cover design for the cookbook, is from students at Parkside Elementary in Murray. The drawings make the book fun and attractive to kids as well as adults, making it easy to get the whole family involved.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. One in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, equal to 2,200 deaths per day.

The Intermountain Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center is one of the nation’s premier heart centers, and has renowned heart experts in more than a dozen heart specialties, including artificial heart/mechanical support, heart rhythm disorders, structural heart disorders and heart surgery.
