One out of every six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Approximately 240,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 2011, according to the American Cancer Society. Prostate cancer is the second-most common form of cancer in men, behind skin cancer, and the second-leading cause of death among men with cancer in the United States.
Prostate cancer is mostly a slow-growing cancer that starts in the gland cells of the prostate. It can often be found early by testing the amount of prostate-specific antigen in your blood and by doing a digital rectal exam. The screenings are held during September, which is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
