Dimension of Care: Community Stewardship

Our Benefit to the Community

We work with others to improve health.

In 2012, Intermountain began its comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment to identify health needs in the areas served by each of our 21 owned hospitals (Intermountain manages but does not own Garfield Memorial). We invited community input on healthcare needs and reviewed data regarding 46 health indicators.

The assessment identified four priority health issues within our communities: 1) chronic diseases associated with weight and unhealthy behaviors; 2) access to comprehensive, high-quality healthcare for low-income and uninsured populations; 3) access to appropriate behavioral health services for low-income and uninsured populations; and 4) preventing accidents and injuries to children and adolescents. To address these issues, each hospital met with community representatives, identified the top health priority for their local community, and developed strategies for a three-year implementation plan to improve health.

Goals for Community Benefit programs are established annually by Intermountain’s Board of Trustees.

Besides the outreach efforts identified in the Community Health Needs Assessment, Intermountain also provided other benefits in 2012, including:

Community clinics for the low-income and uninsured populations. Intermountain directly operates six clinics and financially supports 12 independent community clinics. In 2012, the combined patient visits totaled more than 260,000.

Financial assistance for those unable to pay. In 2012, Intermountain hospitals and clinics provided more than $252 million in assistance (unadjusted). Charity care does not include bad debts, which amounted to about $207 million in 2012.

Health and medical education. We provided and supported educational programs for consumers, patients, and healthcare professionals.
