In addition to providing quality care to our patients each day, Intermountain Healthcare continually looks for ways to improve outcomes. In 2008, Intermountain had more than 1,400 open research studies ranging in focus from improving the gastrointestinal health of premature infants to enhancing chest ultrasounds.
Physicians, nurses, and other staff at Intermountain are making significant improvements in medicine and healthcare delivery. For example, there have been few scientific advances in the study of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), but recently Robert Christensen, MD, and his team at McKay-Dee Hospital have discovered how to reduce, and in some cases prevent, the occurrence of the condition. NEC is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in newborn intensive care units. The study at McKay-Dee Hospital identifies events that may precede the appearance of the condition and that can indicate the need for early intervention. Another study at Intermountain’s Life Flight air transport and rescue service looks at a condition called “sleep inertia” that may occur when a person awakes from sleep. This study of pilot sleep patterns will help the air medical transport community minimize aviation risks. And with more than 500 open studies, Primary Children’s Medical Center alone is responsible for more than one-third of Intermountain’s research activity.
Intermountain Healthcare improves patient care and refines clinical methods through medical research. When we improve our processes, we enhance our ability to heal.
