In addition to our focus on providing excellent patient care, Intermountain Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading clinical research organizations.
Together with our colleagues at the University of Utah and other organizations, researchers at Intermountain were involved in more than 1,200 research studies in 2009. They included studies exploring the links between low Vitamin D levels and heart disease, testing an electronic system designed to distinguish infections and biohazards, and a trial that studied the effectiveness of a certain medication on melanoma.
At Intermountain, medical research helps us provide better patient care, because we focus on conducting studies and clinical trials that directly affect the quality of care. Much of the research at Intermountain occurs as part of our eight clinical programs, and we’re seeing results. For example, research conducted at Intermountain led to the development of a model that has proven more effective in caring for babies with high fevers.
Research at Intermountain also sometimes results in new healthcare
products. Those include:
- A computer lung simulator to help design inhalers and other respiratory care products.
- A solution given to premature babies to reduce infection complications.
- A genetic test to help predict the right amount of a blood thinner to give to a patient.
- A novel circulatory support device to assist some patients during or after heart transplantation, open heart surgery, or certain types of heart attacks.
