Dimension of Care: Patient Engagement

Jarrod Garr has logged thousands of miles—and improved his health along the way—as part of the LiVe Well Bike Team.

LiVe Well Bike Team: Promoting health and friendship

“Pursuing health and fitness is easier and more fun when you join others. Now Jarrod is one of our strongest riders.” —Tom Baker, PA.

Jarrod Garr’s family has a history of diabetes. But the idea that he should take better care of himself because of that history never really hit home until his eight-year-old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Recognizing his own risk, Jarrod decided he needed to make some changes. He chose to rethink his poor diet and lack of exercise, so he joined the LiVe Well Bike Team and trained with various members, including Intermountain Healthcare employee Tom Baker, PA.

The LiVe Well Bike Team includes groups of Intermountain Healthcare employees and community members interested in cycling and mountain biking for health. This extended team is open to anyone and includes participants in many areas. Some ride for fun. Others involve themselves in more competitive races, such as the 200-plus-mile LOTOJA event from Logan to Jackson. All are committed to helping themselves and fellow riders lead healthier lifestyles.

The LiVe Well Bike Team and members like Tom were just what Jarrod needed. He has lost weight. He has found more energy. His attitude is more positive. He says he feels more “awake.” And Jarrod has made new friends, in addition to Tom, who share the same drive to live healthier. “I feel better than I have in years. And I love that I’ve met so many different people who all enjoy riding,” said Jarrod.
