Alzheimer’s disease involves changes in the brain that cause neurons to die. Early symptoms include short-term memory loss and difficulty with language, but it can eventually lead to complete loss of bodily function and death.

For patients over the age of 65, the decline typically is relatively slow — often taking a decade or more before death. Unfortunately for early-onset Alzheimer’s patients — who are under age 65 — the decline can be much more rapid, with death typically occurring less than five years after diagnosis.
