Insulin-dependent diabetes is a disorder in which the body does not produce enough insulin and is, therefore, unable to convert nutrients into the energy necessary for daily activity. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, regulates blood glucose levels by promoting the movement of glucose into cells for energy production or into the liver and fat cells for storage. (Glucose is a simple sugar that is the body's primary source of energy for cell metabolism.) The disorder affects females and males in equal numbers. Although the exact causes of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes are not known, autoimmune, genetic and environmental (i.e., viral) factors seem to play a role.
