Every baby born at our hospital is given a newborn hearing test by a newborn hearing screener, and test results are reviewed by an audiologist. This is a routine screening to identify possible hearing loss or difficulties. Most babies don't have hearing loss, but for those that do, early detection is important to provide the child with appropriate treatment and support.
The Screening Tests
We perform two common hearing tests on newborn babies:
- The otoacoustic emissions test
- The auditory brainstem response test
One or both tests may be performed, depending on the child.
During the tests, an audiologist inserts a small device at
the opening of each of the baby's ears which broadcasts sound
waves into the ear and measures the response. These painless screenings take about 15 to 45 minutes to complete.
