What is Colorectal Cancer?

Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells. When these cells grow in the colon, it is called colon cancer. When they occur in the rectum, it is called rectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States in both men and women, not counting skin cancers. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Colorectal cancer screening

The American Cancer Society recommends that colorectal cancer screening be started at age 50. If you have a strong family history of colorectal cancer, the tests may start at an earlier age. You should talk to your doctor about which tests are recommended for you. Tests may include one or more of the following:
  • Colonoscopy
  • Fecal occult blood test
  • Digital rectal exam
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Double Contrast Barium Enema

These screening services are available at our Endoscopy Center. Learn more and make an appointment by calling (801) 507-3262.
