Our heart rhythm specialists are committed to the research program here at Intermountain Heart Institute and frequently lead clinical investigations that influence heart rhythm practice across the nation. Their projects have lead to important discoveries in several areas of heart rhythm treatment:

  • Radiofrequency ablation, including the best methods of energy delivery to heart tissue
  • Safety of heart rhythm medications
  • Atrial fibrillation treatments, including improvements in patient outcomes and mortality
  • Atrial fibrillation and the risk of stroke
  • Ambulatory telemetry and EKG monitoring outside of the hospital

Trials Open for Enrollment

Our heart rhythm specialists are currently working with our research program on clinical trials in the area of atrial fibrillation:

Long Title: Catheter Ablation Versus Antiarrhythmic Drug Therapy for Atrial Fibrillation Trial
Principal Investigator: Jared Bunch, MD
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health
Description: This study compares the efficacy of medications versus catheter ablation procedures for the treatment of patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. Half of the participants of this study will take medications and half will undergo catheter ablation procedure. The purpose of this trial is to determine how patients respond to the two types of treatments. Patients may be eligible to participate in this study if they have persistent cardiac arrhythmia.
