"Ongoing research is an integral part of providing the most advanced therapies in the safest and least invasive way possible." - Kent Jones, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Our cardiothoracic surgeons are committed to the research program here at Intermountain Heart Institute and frequently lead clinical investigations that influence surgical practice across the nation. Their projects have lead to important discoveries in several areas of cardiothoracic surgery, including:

  • Heart transplantation, including donor assessment, effects of ischemic time, effects of blood transfusion, and types of donor organ rejection
  • Ventricular assist devices used as bridge to transplantation and destination ("permanent") therapy, including device development, survival benefits, and surgical revisions
  • Valve repair and replacement, including the development of transcatheter aortic valve replacement
  • Adult congenital heart disease, including revision of prior Ross procedure
  • Less invasive ways to treat atrial fibrillation, including MAZE and GALAXY Procedures
  • Academic methods in cardiothoracic surgery residency programs

Our cardiothoracic surgeons are currently working with other physicians and our research program researchers on clinical trials in the following areas:
