Heart Studies with PET/CT
- New in September 2011
The Heart Institute is preparing to expand its capabilities in nuclear cardiology by offering PET/CT studies. PET/CT produces unparalleled images of blood flow to the heart and is the most accurate tool in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

Advanced Cardiac Imaging Program
The Advanced Cardiac Imaging Program at Intermountain Medical Center is an experienced, high-volume, imaging service. Our committed team works seamlessly with various specialists and surgeons across our hospital system to diagnose patients in all stages of heart disease. Our program was founded in 1978 and today our team provides services for patients in both hospital and clinic environments.
Annual Volumes
- 7,000 nuclear heart scans
- 14,000 echocardiograms (the most of any echo lab in Utah)
Appropriate Use and Accreditation
Our imaging programs follow standards that are globally practiced and accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). Our echo lab has achieved IACEL accreditation for the last 9 years.
Our physicians are focused on the appropriate use of imaging scans, applying the right test to the right patient at the right time. We also pay special attention to keeping patients safe and comfortable throughout procedures.
Cutting-edge Technology
Our program uses the latest imaging methods available to obtain a more accurate picture of the patient’s heart. Examples include the use of hybrid SPECT/CT cameras with advanced correction abilities in our nuclear imaging program. These cameras improve image sensitivity and minimize the likelihood of viewing artifacts.
Our echo lab provides the latest testing including stress, transesophageal, contrast, neonatal and 3D echos. The lab boasts 23 state-of-the-art 3D echo ultrasound machines that are all networked to a hospital-wide imaging system.
Increased Availability
Our program offers rapid turnaround for emergent patients. Results are available immediately after completion of the procedure. We offer an open schedule, allowing same day appointments for new patients. After hours, we provide “on-call” coverage so physicians may access our service at any time.
In addition, the results of our studies can be viewed anywhere in the hospital through our electronic medical record system. Image workstations are available on each patient unit and available to our cardiologists for immediate review.
