Our goal is to get patients stable enough to move to a rehab setting, whether inpatient or outpatient.
Intermountain Medical Center has one of the few dedicated Neuro Critical Care Units in the Intermountain West. Patients on that unit are under the medical care of neuro intensivists and nurses who are specially trained in neuro critical care.
On the 14th floor, there is a heavy emphasis on patient and family education as well as early physical and occupational therapy and speech therapy. The goal on this unit is to get patients stable enough to move to a rehab setting, whether inpatient or outpatient. This unit is staffed by neuro hospitalists and nurse practitioners who are trained in managing stroke patients.
At Intermountain Medical Center, more than 90 percent of stroke
patients are prescribed a certain combination of medications at
discharge, including drugs to reduce cholesterol and blood clots. These
medications, when taken consistently, have been shown to greatly reduce
the risk of future strokes.
