Celebrating 2,411 Kidney Transplants in 30 Years9/11/2013
The kidney and pancreas transplant program at Intermountain Medical Center is celebrating 30 years of saving lives in the Intermountain West. On Thursday, patients, physicians and transplant staff will gather to mark this medical milestone and participate in a ceremony to celebrate organ donation – the gift of life.
For many patients who suffer from kidney failure and other kidney disorders, a transplant is the only option beside dialysis treatment.
The kidney transplant program began in 1983 at LDS Hospital. Since then, the team, now based at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, has performed a total 2,411 transplants, including five kidney transplants performed last week. Approximately 60 percent of kidney transplants performed at Intermountain Medical Center are from living donors including family members, friends, co-workers, or Good Samaritans, who have no relation to or affiliation with a kidney transplant recipient.
