WHAT:
2012 was quite the year for disasters: wildfires, floods, superstorms, influenza – it never seemed to end. What we learned over the past year from the experts was the importance of resiliency and readiness, and how they can impact a third “R” – how we respond.

On Friday, disaster experts from throughout the country will gather at LDS Hospital for The Intermountain Center for Disaster Preparedness at LDS Hospital’s symposium on “Resiliency and Readiness: The Pathway for the Future.”  NEWS MEDIA ARE INVITED.

Presenters will focus on lessons-learned from wildfires, floods, super storms, influenza outbreaks, and other natural disasters, and share tips for how to be better prepared and work cohesively with local and federal agencies.

Topics include:
• Disaster risk reduction
• Historical perspective on preparedness and professionalism in public health
• Volunteer support during a disaster: The federal and local response
• Insurance issues after a super storm
• Utah DMAT and EMAC team members who went to New York to support the post-storm recovery from Superstorm Sandy.
• How to prioritize care for 1,000 people in a shelter

“This is a great opportunity to hear first-hand from the people in the trenches during natural disasters,” says Debbie Kim, director of the center at LDS Hospital. “From physicians, to industry experts, we’ve assembled a wealth of knowledgeable experts on how to prepare for the worst.”
