Physical Therapy
Neurological Physical Therapy provides rehabilitation services for patients who have suffered some kind of neurological trauma, spinal cord, or head injury. Common diagnoses that we treat include: stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and amputation of an extremity.
We work with patients to improve their quality of life and their ability to perform functional activities. We use a variety of state of the art equipment and manual therapy techniques to achieve positive results.
Occupational Therapy
Adult Occupational Therapy is skilled treatment that assists individuals to achieve as much independence as possible so that they can live functional, independent and satisfying lives. Regardless of diagnosis, Occupational Therapy focuses on getting our patients to return to the activities they want and need to do. This is accomplished using various treatment approaches that focus on helping individuals regain their strength, activity tolerance, safety awareness and functional use of their body. Treatment can also focus on relearning components of memory, problem solving, motor planning, money management, safety training and home management tasks.
In addition, Stewart Rehab Center offers facilities to train patients on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). ADLs are the basic everyday tasks we do to get ready for our day such as grooming, dressing, bathing, toileting, and feeding. Patients learn to be safe and as independent as possible in a natural home like environment.
Speech Language Pathology
Adult speech therapists at Stewart Rehab Center primarily evaluate and treat patients who have suffered a Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, or other various neurological disorders such as MS and Parkinson’s.
Therapists focus on improving a patient’s:
- Speech & Voice Therapy
- Language
- Cognitive Delays
- Swallowing Disorders
Various testing procedures, therapy materials and modern computer programs are used to help the patient achieve their goals.
Voice Clinic
Stewart Rehab Center’s Voice Clinic offers advanced treatment for patients who suffer from a wide spectrum of voice disorders. The clinic features state-of-the-art equipment that allows for sophisticated evaluations. Digital video stroboscopy, for example, provides clinicians with a clear view of a patient's vocal fold structure and function, including wave movement. Flexible endoscopy allows for direct visualization of the pharynx, as well as the larynx. Patients can view a digital video playback of their examination to understand how their voice functions and learn how to manage their own voice care. Specialized software measures and analyzes pitch and range, volume and quality, and then helps us adjust and improve them. Self-management can significantly enhance long-term outcomes.
Patients with a history of hoarseness, vocal fatigue, voice loss, or any other condition where changes have occurred in voice production can benefit from the clinic. The clinic also treats patients who need voice therapy after medical and surgical interventions, and patients who use their voices professionally, who can be taught vocal health and hygiene practices.
Balance Center - Bring balance back into your life
At Stewart Rehab’s Balance Center we provide services to help individuals who have problems with balance and dizziness. Our specialized clinical team uses advanced technology and research-supported therapy to assess and manage a wide range of balance disorders in patients of all ages.
Our balance center services include:
- Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP)
- Vestibular & Balance Therapy
- Positional Vertigo
Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP)
CDP was developed to evaluate the functional capacity and coordinated integration of all components: eyes (vision), inner ear (vestibular), and muscles and joints (somatosensory) involved in maintaining balance. CDP can determine whether one or more of the three systems are abnormal.
CDP is a non-invasive procedure using sensors and computer monitoring to record body movement while the patient maintains balance in a variety of standing test conditions. It helps to determine a patient's fall risk, appropriate timing of balance responses and under what environments a patient will have difficulty.
Vestibular & Balance Therapy
Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation is the exercise-based approach to lessening the severity of dizziness, balance problems, and associated limitations. Patients undergo comprehensive physical therapy assessments of strength, dynamic balance skills, and movement tolerance to determine an individualized and customized exercise program.
Research has shown these specialized exercises to be very effective at lessening the severity symptoms and improving function in all ages, which may include anyone from children to the elderly, athletes and professionals. Treatment frequency and duration varies according to initial findings but typically averages one treatment session each week for 8-10 visits.
Positional Vertigo
There are many causes of vertigo, dizziness and/or loss of balance. One of the most common of these is Positional Vertigo. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is often discovered with diagnostic testing. People with this disorder complain of dizziness or spinning when they look up or down, bend over, lie down, get up from lying down, or when turning their head or body from side to side.
The good news about this significant disorder is that it is very treatable. Our research shows that 93 percent of patients with BPPV can be cleared with one or two treatment sessions.
Wound, Ostomy & Lymphedema Services
Wound Care
Outpatient wound services at Stewart Rehab Center provide scientifically proven, evidence based patient care. Patients with wounds are evaluated & treated by a certified wound specialist & specialized wound care nursing staff.
Specialty modalities such as High Volt Electrical Stimulation & Pneumatic Sequential Compression Pumping are available. These modalities promote improved wound healing for chronic, slow to heal wounds. Electrical stimulation works at the cellular level to increase blood flow as well as to promote increased collagen formation for new tissue growth & eventual epithelization. Sequential compression pumping helps to decrease swelling about the wound in the involved extremity. In addition, we utilize the latest in gentle, low frequency ultrasound technology to gently remove dead tissue from the wound bed in order to more quickly help the wound progress towards healing.
Ostomy Care and Teaching
Outpatient Ostomy Services at Stewart Rehab Center provides preoperative stoma site marking, as well as preoperative and postoperative education. Ostomates are evaluated & treated by educated nurses, trained to identify issues that may arise from improperly fitting ostomy appliances.
Lymphedema Care
Lymphedema is swelling caused by an abnormal build-up of fluids and cellular waste products in the tissues. The involved limb is often described as swollen, heavy, painful, & difficult to functionally utilize.
At Stewart Rehab Center we provide skilled assessment, complete decongestive therapy through the use of manual lymphatic drainage & edema mobilization techniques. Follow up treatment includes compression therapy, exercises, and measurement for the obtainment of compression garments to maintain the reduction of the limb.
