We promote a family centered environment and encourage visiting under the guidelines listed below. The nurses will maintain a safe and healing environment for our patients, which may require them to limit or control the number or visitors at the bedside.

Women & Newborn Visiting Policy

1. General visiting hours on all Women & Newborn units are between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Due to fire codes and emergency safety, visiting must be done at the bedside or in family waiting areas only. Please contact the unit's shift coordinator for special arrangements if desired.

2. Adults, children over 14, and healthy siblings of the newborn are allowed to visit in the labor and delivery and OB/GYN departments.

3. Families and visitors are important to the comfort, healing, and recovery of patients. As infants and children are susceptible to infections, please be responsible to see that those visiting do not have a contagious disease such as:

  • fever
  • cold sores
  • runny nose
  • sore throat
  • strep throat
  • cold
  • shingles/chicken pox
  • open or draining cuts, or wounds
  • conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • diarrhea
  • flu
  • rash
  • cough
  • lice
  • ringworm
  • any other contagious disease not listed above

If anyone wishing to visit is currently taking a prescribed antibiotic, they must have been treated for at least 24 hours prior to visiting.

Anyone having contact with diseases that have extended incubation periods (including but not limited to those listed below) during the specified incubation period may not be allowed to visit for health and safety reasons.

  • Measles: 1-2 weeks
  • Rubella (German Measles): 2-3 weeks
  • Chicken Pox: 2-3 weeks
  • Whooping Cough: 7-30 days
  • Mumps: 12-25 days
  • Infectious Hepatitis: 2-3 months

4. All visitors must wash their hands before and after touching or holding an infant or child. For safety reasons, visitors must be seated when holding a newborn or child.

5. Children must be accompanied by an adult and stay at the bedside at all times when visiting.

6. Family waiting areas are located close to each unit for your convenience. Please help maintain clean and healthy areas for others to enjoy also.

7. All visitors will be asked the first and last name of the patient they are visiting. Entrance will only be granted to those who are visiting a known patient. Hospital security may be contacted at anytime for any security concerns.

8. The safety and security of our patients and visitors are of the utmost importance at McKay-Dee Hospital. Please help us to ensure a safe and healing environment for patients by keeping noise to a minimum. Disruptive visitors may be asked to leave.

Specialized Care Units

The following visitor guidelines are needed for specialized care areas to ensure patient safety and quality care is provided to all patients.

NICU

The visiting policy is very specialized and will be available to visitors upon admittance.

Labor & Delivery

During the Labor & Delivery process and in the recovery period immediately following delivery, in-room visitors will be limited to five (including the significant other.)

Due to the space limitations in the triage room/recovery room and for patient safety and confidentiality, only one visitor may be in the room at a time.

Visitors must be at least 14-years-old to enter the unit unless they are children of the patient in Labor & Delivery. Children of the patient may visit during visiting hours.

Post-Partum

Visitors must be at least 14-years-old to enter the unit unless they are children of the patient on the Maternity Unit. Children of the patient may visit during visiting hours.

Pediatrics

The playroom is for in-patient children and their siblings only. The patient or siblings must be non-contagious and accompanied by an adult at all times.

Thank you for visiting and please enjoy your stay while here at McKay-Dee Hospital.

Visiting Policy may change with seasonal illnesses or as needed for other contagious diseases within the community.
