A gastrostomy is a surgical opening in a child's stomach to insert a feeding tube. A child may be given a gastrostomy because serious medical problems prevent him or her from eating and drinking in the usual way. For example, if a child cannot get enough to eat, a doctor may recommend a gastrostomy. The tube used for feeding is sometimes called a G-tube.
