Cardiothoracic surgeons at Primary Children's perform hundreds of heart surgeries every year, ranging from correction of simple heart defects to major repairs of the most complex conditions, as well as performing Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) placement and heart transplantation.
For some patients, surgery will occur within the first hours of life, while others will undergo care, thoughtfully coordinated by the specialized teams of cardiology, intensive care, and cardiothoracic surgery. This pre-surgical care can last for several weeks or months prior to surgery.
Whether for initial surgical repair, or for follow up surgery occuring any time through a patient’s life, our surgeons work with cardiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiac nurses and other team members to plan care according to each patient’s unique circumstances.
