Children arrive at the hospital with injuries or illnesses. Whether they’re unexpected or not, such health challenges are often frightening and overwhelming to a young patient. Caregivers at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center have a variety of resources available that will help minimize the impact that hospitalization can have on a child.
Any child undergoing a surgical procedure at Utah Valley Regional is invited to attend our Pre-Op Hop class. The evening event is designed to help a child understand what will happen when he or she comes to the hospital. A child life specialist leads the class through a series of games and activities that will answer many of the questions the children may have before a procedure. For more information about Pre-Op Hop and the classes we offer, please follow the link below.
When a test or treatment is necessary to improve your child’s condition, it’s comforting to know there’s a team at Utah Valley Regional dedicated to help him or her get through it as easily as possible. The Pediatric Sedation Team provides safe sedation and improves their young patient’s overall experience during painful or stressful procedures and/or treatments. Through the use of oral or intravenous (IV) sedation, the team can help pediatric patients from birth up to age 18.
Some procedures that will benefit from the use of sedation include, but are not limited to:
- Lumbar punctures
- Major dressing changes/wound VACs
- PICC lines
- Abscess drainages
- Urology studies
- Fracture reductions
- Chest tube placement and/or removal
- Auditory Brain Response (ABR) tests
- CT scans
- Any other procedure that requires limited movement from an anxious or frightened child
During Your Hospital Stay
The Pediatrics unit at Utah Valley Regional is dedicated to making a child’s experience with hospitalization the best it can be. Each room is equipped for a parent to stay with the child at all times. There is also a parent lounge and two parent sleep rooms for families of more critical patients.
Our multi-disciplinary team is ready and waiting to address your child’s healthcare needs. Physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, child life specialists, dietitians, pharmacists, patient care managers and nursing staff are each specially trained in pediatrics and eager to help your child.
Our unit includes play areas for patients and is decorated with bright colors and artwork throughout, providing a fun and inviting environment for children. Weekly visits from pet therapy dogs also give young patients a welcome break from the normal hospital routine.
