The expert physicians and staff in the Maternal/Fetal Medicine Department at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center are ready to assist mothers who need extra attention during their pregnancy. Care for mothers and babies in high-risk pregnancies, including women with:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Multiples
  • Previous premature birth or repetitive miscarriages

Using state-of-the-art assessment and management techniques, our maternal/fetal medicine physicians Donna Dizon-Townson, MD; Glenn Schemmer, MD; Julie Gainer, DO and Helen Feltovich, MD consult with a mother’s regular physician to provide excellent care for both mother and baby. Services include:

  • Non-stress tests
  • Diagnostic ultrasound
  • Amniocentesis
  • Umbilical blood sampling
  • Intrauterine fetal transfusion
  • Fetal echocardiograms
  • Chorionic villi sampling
  • Genetic counseling

Specially-trained genetic counselors assess patients for their individual risks of inherited disease and advise parents about risk factors and potential treatment options. These counselors also help families connect to community resources and support groups.

The MFM department holds a gestational diabetes clinic every Monday for expectant moms who have both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The patients are treated by the diabetic educators with their care being overseen by a perinatologist. These visits are often in conjunction with an ultrasound or a non-stress test, making it more convenient for the patient.
