Arnold Milstein, MD, MPH, has recently been named to serve on the Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees. Dr. Milstein is a nationally recognized expert on healthcare quality.

Dr. Milstein is the medical director of the Pacific Business Group on Health, a business coalition that seeks to improve the quality and availability of healthcare while moderating cost. In July 2010, Dr. Milstein was appointed a tenured professor of medicine at Stanford University, where he will establish a new research center dedicated to accelerating innovations in healthcare delivery. He currently advises and previously directed clinical consulting at Mercer, a global consulting firm that acquired National Medical Audit, a national company that he founded and led.

The Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees comprises 20 healthcare and community leaders who volunteer their time without pay to direct the operations of the nonprofit organization. Board members set policy, provide input, and represent the interests of the community. In addition to Intermountain's central Board, the organization is guided by trustees on governing boards for hospitals and other care services, as well as on charitable foundation boards.

"Intermountain is pleased to welcome Dr. Milstein, who is nationally recognized for his significant contributions to healthcare quality," said Kem Gardner, chairman of Intermountain's Board of Trustees. "He has had a remarkable and distinguished career, and we look forward to adding his insights and perspectives to Intermountain's Board."

Dr. Milstein is the author of more than 40 published articles and book chapters on improving healthcare value. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and appointed by the U.S. Controller General as a Congressional advisor on Medicare. Dr. Milstein earned a medical degree from Tufts University, a master's degree in health services planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University.
