Shake Up Your Breakfast Routine
Want a breakfast that's yummy, amazingly healthy and incredibly easy to prepare days in advance? Here's a "formula" for delicious breakfast smoothies that includes a serving from each of the four food groups and can be whipped up fast and even eaten on the go.
Ingredients you will need:
- A banana (fresh or frozen, cut into one-inch chunks)
- 1/3 cup of other fruit, fresh or frozen (berries, apples, grapes, mango, kiwi, melon)
- 1/3 cup of skim milk or yogurt (plain or vanilla)
- 1/4 cup rolled oats
Especially great — you can get this mixture ready the night before, or even get a couple of days' worth washed and bagged. Then all you have to do in the morning is drop it into the blender, push a button, pour, and you're good to go. Better yet: Don't rush out the door if you don't have to — it's always healthier to eat meals at the table. You can sip and savor it as you make plans for a successful day ahead.
Note to Parents: Did you know that frozen fruit can be more nutritious than fresh fruit?
Reason: It's picked at peak ripeness and flash-frozen, so the nutrients are locked in. Fresh fruit is often picked before it's quite ripe to allow for transportation — and nutrients fade as the fruit ages.
