In addition to establishing itself as one of the nation's leading health systems, Intermountain is also an expert in the field of laboratory medicine.  With the establishment of Intermountain Central Laboratory in 2007, a core laboratory, Intermountain conveniently serves the needs of its inpatient population on campus at its flagship hospital, Intermountain Medical Center.  Additionally, the Central Lab is the hub of "esoteric" testing for the entire Intermountain laboratory system, all 22 hospitals.  Specimens from every hospital and clinic within the system are transported to the Central Lab multiple times during the day for analysis.  Centralized esoteric testing significantly reduces expense and eliminates duplicatation within the laboratory system.  The Central Lab also competes in the commercial laboratory outreach market.  Now serving the laboratory needs of over 1,700 physician office practices and thousands of physicians, Intermountain is highly experienced and prepared to offer consulting services to other hospitals and health systems attempting to establish an outreach presence.
