The Utah State Legislature prepared and read a citation last week that honors Intermountain Healthcare for its leadership in healthcare delivery and its contributions to communities in Utah and southeast Idaho.

Senator Allen Christensen, representing Morgan, Summit and Weber Counties, read the document, which cited Intermountain as a “national leader in clinical quality improvement ... with outcomes that are among the best in the nation,” on the floor of the Senate to the room of legislators.

The citation mentioned Intermountain’s extensive efforts in providing care to uninsured people in Utah and its support of local universities in training medical professionals. It also referred to the many times national leaders have praised Intermountain for its ability to provide high-quality care at low costs.

The citation concluded with these words: “Now, therefore, let it be known, that the Legislature of the state of Utah recognizes and expresses its gratitude to Intermountain Healthcare and its leadership for services rendered to the state and its citizens.”

Intermountain CEO Charles Sorenson, MD, and former CEO Bill Nelson accepted the official citation after it was read last Thursday morning.

UTAH STATE LEGISLATURE:

Official Citation Honoring Intermountain Healthcare

WHEREAS, Intermountain Healthcare is a nonprofit healthcare system based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with 22 hospitals (one located in Idaho), more than 185 clinics, and is one of Utah’s largest employers; and

WHEREAS, Intermountain Healthcare is a community-based organization governed by 470 volunteer trustees who serve without pay on Intermountain boards; and

WHEREAS, the organization is widely recognized as a national leader in clinical quality improvement and in efficient healthcare delivery, with clinical outcomes that are among the best in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Intermountain Healthcare works to keep rates affordable and has been cited as a national benchmark for effective healthcare (predicting a 40 percent reduction in U.S. Medicare expenditures if other hospitals nationwide delivered healthcare the way Intermountain does); and

WHEREAS, part of Intermountain Healthcare’s mission is to provide generally available medical care to residents of the region with a medical need, regardless of ability to pay (and in 2013 provided financial assistance valued at more than $250 million to patients in more than 239,000 visits); and

WHEREAS, Intermountain Healthcare strongly supports rural healthcare in Utah with hospitals and clinics located in cities such as Delta, Fillmore, Panguitch, Mt. Pleasant, Providence, Tremonton, Ephraim, Manti, Salina, Parowan, Huntsville, and Heber City; and

WHEREAS, the organization operates six charitable community clinics and financially supports 12 other charitable clinics serving the low-income and uninsured populations; and

WHEREAS, Intermountain works with local universities to provide training annually for thousands of doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and other health professionals, helping ensure an appropriate supply of qualified clinicians to care for Utah’s population; and

WHEREAS, national leaders across the political spectrum, from both sides of the aisle, have praised Intermountain Healthcare as an effective example of how healthcare should be provided.

Now, therefore, let it be known, that the legislature of the state of Utah recognizes and expresses its gratitude to Intermountain Healthcare and its leadership for services rendered to the state and its citizens.
