Dr. Tamara Sheffield, community health advocate, wins Award of Excellence for promoting healthy nutrition and activity to Utah's adolescents

The Utah Society of Healthcare Communication and Marketing Professionals recently honored Tamara Sheffield, MD, with its 2010 communicator of the year award.

The Award of Excellence is USHCAM's highest honor and recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the cause of increasing health awareness in Utah and advancing the profession.

"Dr. Sheffield is a recognizable authority in the community for good health," said Bonnie Midget, USHCAM president. "Her real success has been in working with administrators, physicians, and community leaders in shaping policy and programs to give attention to preventative health."

Dr. Sheffield develops guidelines, tools, and programs focused on preventive medicine as the medical director of community health and prevention for Intermountain Healthcare. She is the spokesperson of Intermountain's LiVe campaign, promoting healthy nutrition and activity to Utah's adolescents, and was the spokesperson for Intermountain's Health Highlights media campaign. She is chair of the Utah Adult Immunization Coalition and is a former liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Presented annually since 1998, Award of Excellence winners include Linda Abel, Mary Nichols, Janet Brooks, Lois Collins, Pamela Atkinson, and Ed Yeates. USHCAM is the primary professional organization for communications and marketing professionals of healthcare organizations along the Wasatch Front and in Utah.
