Dixie Maternal Fetal Medicine is a consultation clinic seeing women who are experiencing a pregnancy complication. Our maternal fetal medicine doctors, or perinatologists, are experienced in caring for a wide variety of pregnancy complications. They work with your primary doctor to assure proper care for both mother and baby. Our local maternal fetal medicine doctor is Kurt Hales, MD, who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Our other maternal fetal medicine doctors travel to St. George from Salt Lake City to see patients twice a month.
Only about 10% of pregnant women require the services of a maternal fetal medicine doctor. Our patients are often women who have medical conditions that can potentially have an adverse affect on the baby during pregnancy. The most common pregnancy complications include an abnormal lab result, a fetal abnormality, or a medical condition such as diabetes in the mother. Other maternal medical conditions include pre-eclampsia, kidney or gastrointestinal disease, heart disease, diabetes, or other infectious diseases.
Sometimes even healthy women require the specialized care of a perinatologist: women who may be having twins or multiple babies, those who have had frequent miscarriages in the past, early water break, or other issues that may place the mother or the baby at increased risk.
Services available at our clinic include:
- fetal monitoring
- specialized fetal procedures
- genetic counseling
- consultation regarding high-risk pregnancies
- gestational diabetes counseling and management
