Breast reconstruction surgery is performed on thousands of women each year who have lost one or both of their breasts to diseases like breast cancer, or to traumatic injuries.
Treating breast cancer may result in one or both breasts being removed. Patient’s can meet with our plastic surgeon to find out if breast reconstruction is an available option. Breast reconstruction can be accomplished by using implants, or a DIEP flap, which uses a patient’s own tissue to reconstruct the breast. The type of breast reconstruction is not the same for every person. Patients can discuss their options with our plastic surgeon during a free consultation.
Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP)
DIEP is a breast reconstruction technique where fat and overlying abdominal skin is used to recreate breasts from the patient’s own tissue. This is among the best functional surgical approaches to breast reconstruction and often creates a more natural and realistic result.
Following this type of procedure, additional reconstructive surgery will be required to create a nipple and areola (the dark skin around the nipple). Our plastic surgeon at McKay-Dee Dermatology and Plastic Surgery can perform these procedures in our facility.
