The Achilles tendon is one of the longest and most frequently stressed tendons in your body. It is the tendon along the back of your lower leg that allows you to push off when walking, jogging, or running.
This tendon used in almost every kind of physical activity and is particularly vulnerable to injury. Some of the more common overuse injuries effect the Achilles tendon include Achilles tendinopathy, tears, or rupture.
Achilles tendinopathy is a common cause of pain in the lower posterior portion of your leg. It can occur in anyone who engages in regular physical activity, with atheltes having a much higher risk. Tendinopathy can occur from overuse and results in the degeneration of the Achilles tendon which can cause swelling and pain in the posterior lower leg and heel.
Achilles tendinopathy can be caused by a variety of activities, including:
- Wearing high heels
- Playing a sport, especially sports that require rapid changes in movement
- Overexerting a tight muscle
- Stepping up your rate of physical activity too quickly
- Exercising without proper warm-up and stretching

Achilles Tendon Tear
If you are an athlete, especially if you are male athlete over 30, you have a significantly higher chance of tearing your Achilles tendon. This happens most often when an athlete plays sports that require a lot of quick starts, such a sprinting.
