Dixie Regional Awarded Palliative Care Grant

2/21/2011

The Regence Foundation recently awarded $247,000 to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George to implement a hospital-based palliative care program. Palliative care is a medical specialty geared toward helping seriously ill patients find relief from the symptoms of their disease.

“When patients with serious illness talk about the kind of care and support they want, they often describe palliative care,” said Kieren Porter, Regence Foundation board chair. “The Regence Foundation seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of palliative care among patients and their families, as well as the medical community. Hospitals are a key component in making this type of care available to patients at any stage of diagnosis.”

The Regence grant will help Dixie Regional Medical Center to implement its palliative care program, planned Foundation-provided training from Palliative Care Leadership Center (PCLC) and a planning grant in 2010. PCLC is a national training and mentoring initiative to help hospitals start and expand high-quality palliative care programs.

“With this grant, Dixie can provide comprehensive palliative care services intended to improve the quality of life for patients across all diagnoses,” said Craig Skousen, director of case management for Dixie Regional. “Our goal is that Dixie Regional’s palliative care program serve as a model for the entire state.” He estimates that more than 300 patients a year will benefit from these services.

The grant is part of The Regence Foundation’s Sojourns grant making program to promote hospital and community based palliative care services. Through Sojourns, The Foundation aims to foster best practices, leadership and collaboration that help people with life-threatening and incurable illness to access quality palliative care in their own community.
