A physiatrist, also called a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, is a doctor who helps patients gain function lost through injury, illness, or any other disabling condition.

A physiatrist uses treatments such as exercise, injections, bracing, adaptive equipment, and oral medications to improve function. By improving overall health, emotional well-being and function, the patient is able to participate more fully in family, recreational, and social/school activities.

A physiatrist coordinates care to develop a family-centered rehabilitation plan to fit the unique needs of each patient.
