Bio and Interests
Dr. Robert Ferguson brings to Utah some of the most cutting edge techniques in plastic surgery. His approach to breast cancer reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, and skin cancer reconstruction is born from his experiences with internationally renowned plastic surgery programs such as MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan). He continues to collaborate with these institutions in the areas of cancer reconstruction and surgical management of lymphedema. In fact, he has been the frontrunner for providing microsurgical management of lymphedema to the intermountain west and the first to perform lymphovenous bypass in Utah.
Among his patients, Dr. Ferguson is known for his caring approach and personal touch. Many breast cancer patients have commented upon the amount of time and attention that was given to them to explain reconstructive options and answer questions, helping them to feel more at ease despite their diagnosis. He enjoys supporting his patients as well through sponsoring patient celebration events, participating in cancer awareness activities, and providing group patient education opportunities.
Service is a major part of Dr. Ferguson¿s family culture. He and his wife travel yearly to South America on service missions to provide surgical correction for children with birth defects and deformities from trauma. With five children at home, he and his wife are very active in the local schools and community.
Dr. Ferguson quickly became known for his care for women with breast cancer. He provides all options for breast cancer reconstruction to include microsurgery (DIEP, SIEA, S-GAP, etc.), implant-based, and fat transfer (to include BRAVA). He provides reconstruction to other forms of cancer, as well, such as head and neck, skin, and sarcoma. Dr. Ferguson is very experienced with the use of the lateral thigh flap (ALT) for reconstruction of the pharynx and esophagus, thus avoiding potential complications associated with removing segments of bowel to rebuild this area after cancer.
Another unique area of expertise is his surgical management of lymphedema. These microsurgical procedures include vascularized lymph node transfer and lymphovenous bypass.
Dr. Ferguson is a skilled provider of the plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques that you will find throughout this website.
