About our provider star ratings

Star ratings help patients evaluate providers

In keeping with our vision and commitment to improve the quality, safety, and experience of care, Intermountain Health publishes patient experience ratings and comments online.

We realize you have a choice in who you choose to deliver your care. Our patient experience surveys, conducted by the independent research firm Qualtrics, present a thorough and accurate picture for patients and their families.

Using national best practices, we have developed an initiative to provide patient experience ratings for select Intermountain Health providers on the intermountainhealthcare.org website.

Here’s how it works

Patients are surveyed on their care experience in the following areas:

  1. How would you rate the overall care you received from (provider name in record)? Scale – Very Poor, Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good
  2. Feedback about the experience with the provider
The first question’s score is converted to an easy-to-understand five-star rating where 5 is the best rating possible. This rating scale is similar to those found on consumer review sites. The star ratings appear on the Find a Doctor profile pages on doctors.intermountainhealth.org.

More about the survey

  • The survey is emailed to patients following their visit at one of our medical group practices.
  • We are committed to posting both positive and negative feedback.
  • Ratings will show when the provider has a minimum of 30 reviews.
  • Survey comments will also be posted, unless they contain any of the following criteria:
    • Comments disclose personal patient information
    • Comments use profane, derogatory, discriminatory, racist, slanderous, or libel language
    • Comments are about another attending physician or Provider
    • Comments describe experience from other episodes of care including inpatient, emergency, or prior experience (e.g., prior surgeries)
    • Comments are about another department (billing, lab, procedure area) or experiences are not directly related to the care delivered by that particular physician or Provider
    • Comments that risk patient privacy (too much personal detail)
    • Comments critiquing physician’s or Provider’s medical decisions
    • Comments about the physician’s or Provider’s physical appearance
    • Reviews that contain only emojis without supporting comments
  • Comments received in a language other than English have been translated prior to being posted.
  • Provider ratings will be updated daily as we receive new survey data and the providers will receive updates when new ratings and comments are published.
