Impact on Local Economies
Enhancing Community Health
Intermountain contributes to the health of local economies in the following ways:
- Total economic impact. In 2004, Intermountain's estimated economic impact on Utah was an estimated $4 billion.
- Jobs. Directly and indirectly, Intermountain accounts for more than 38,000 jobs and more than $2 billion in employment income in Utah. At the end of 2004, Intermountain directly employed more than 25,000 people, more than 20,000 of whom were eligible for benefits. About 64% of Intermountain employees were employed full-time
- Payroll. In 2004, Intermountain distributed more than $1.2 billion in payroll and related benefits to employees.
- Capital improvements. Intermountain is currently in the middle of a $2.8 billion capital building program to replace aging facilities and to provide services to the communities we serve. Since Intermountain was founded in 1975, more than $3.4 billion (inflation adjusted) has been invested in capital improvements, including the building of new hospital facilities. Intermountain's current construction program is creating an estimated 2,700 jobs and $95 million in income per year in Utah.
- Taxes. Even though Intermountain is nonprofit and exempt from property taxes, it does contribute significantly to Utah's tax base in a variety of ways:
- State income taxes. Every year, Intermountain employment contributes about $46 million in Utah income taxes.
- State and local sales taxes. In 2004, the total estimated sales tax generated by Intermountain operations resulted in sales tax collections of more than $64 million, of which nearly $15 million accrued to local governments.
- Property taxes. Every year, Intermountain pays property taxes on health clinics and on facilities that are not directly related to patient care. Intermountain paid more than $2.8 million in property taxes in 2004.
- Business development. Intermountain's healthcare services in urban and rural areas help support business development and tourism in Utah.
