Intermountain - Affordability
Competitive Practices

Charging Less, Delivering More
Intermountain plays a unique role in Utah health care. As stewards of a group of hospitals that were donated to their communities, we work to provide the best care we can offer at the lowest possible cost. While we have worked hard to gain the confidence of our customers, we have always competed fairly.

Intermountain's business approach delivers:
  1. Intermountain charges are low compared to charges of other Utah providers. Intermountain inpatient hospital charges are 19% lower on average than charges at other hospitals in the state, and outpatient charges at Intermountain are on average 31% lower than other Utah hospitals. Intermountain strives to keep prices low as part of our mission to provide accessible, affordable, high quality health care.
  2. Intermountain charges are low compared to national providers. Charges at Intermountain facilities are on average 27% below the national average.
  3. Intermountain is committed to providing quality, low-cost health care in rural communities. Many Intermountain facilities are the sole hospital within a large geographic area. This is consistent with national trends – half of all hospitals in the United States are the sole provider in their community.
  4. Intermountain has always complied with state and federal antitrust law and has never expanded inappropriately. Intermountain owns 19 hospitals and manages an additional one, out of Utah's total 55 hospitals. Intermountain's market share for hospital service has remained about the same since Intermountain was founded in 1975. SelectHealth directly covers about 19% of Utahns.
