Intermountain Healthcare

Intermountain - Integrated Approach
Hospitals & Clinics

Serving Our Communities, First & Always
Intermountain Healthcare was established in 1975 when leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated its 15-hospital system to the communities they served. Other communities have since asked Intermountain to acquire their hospitals and, most recently, the Utah communities of Park City and Riverton requested that Intermountain build hospitals to better serve their residents.

OVERVIEW
Recognized as a model health care organziation, Intermountain is an integrated, efficiently managed system governed by unpaid community volunteer trustees.

Why did these communities choose Intermountain? For several reasons:
  • Quality improvement & clinical excellence
  • Stability & community investment
  • Recruiting & retaining employees
  • Lower health care costs
  • Charitable benefits

LOCAL HOSPITALS BENEFIT
  1. Quality. System-wide quality improvement efforts ensure high quality at all Intermountain facilities. Through the Intermountain system, urban and rural areas of the Intermountain West have access to the high-quality medical care. Clinical programs promote best practice standards in all Intermountain hospitals, from large tertiary-care facilities to small rural facilities.
  2. Stability & investment in the community. Intermountain is financially strong and committed long-term to the Intermountain region. As a nonprofit organization, Intermountain puts money back into communities in the form of capital improvements. Since Intermountain's creation in 1975, it has invested more than $3.4 billion in capital improvements (amount adjusted for inflation), including the replacement of all its hospitals.
  3. Lower costs. As a nonprofit system, Intermountain operates hospitals more efficiently. Lower cost means lower charges. Compared to national average, average Intermountain average hospital charges are 27% lower, according to MEDPAR data.
  4. Recruiting the best employees. As a healthcare system, Intermountain is able to offer enhanced career opportunities, so even small rural hospitals benefit from the best employees.
  5. Charitable benefits. In 2004, Intermountain provided benefits to the community valued at more than $320 million, including more than $67 million in charity medical care directly provided to people unable to pay.
