Intermountain is committed to providing medical care to those who live in rural communities.
Examples of Intermountain's commitment are:
- Rural hospitals. About half of Intermountain's 21 hospitals are rural hospitals. Intermountain has ensured the viability of rural hospitals in the Intermountain area.
- Physician recruiting. Intermountain's commitment to clinical quality and diverse professional opportunities attract highly trained physicians to positions at Intermountain facilities throughout Utah and in Idaho. In conjunction, Intermountain operates two family medicine residency programs, as well as select specialty residency opportunities at some of its hospitals. These programs are important resources that develop a base of physicians willing to practice in rural areas.
- Medical equipment. Many rural Intermountain facilities have advanced screening and diagnostic devices, such as MRIs, not usually found in rural facilities.
- Life Flight. Intermountain's air ambulance service spans the vast distances of the Intermountain West, bringing medical care to residents and visitors in remote areas, and transporting critically ill or injured patients.
- Technology. Intermountain has implemented technology that allows physicians in rural hospitals to confer with specialists in urban areas.
Medical Help is Available Online
When the doctor isn't in, or it is difficult to get to a physician's office, Intermountain offers online symptom checkers for children and adults, which offer advice and help you make appropriate decisions on what level of medical care might be needed for injuries or illness.
The decision charts in each topic, and your common sense, help you make appropriate decisions on what level of medical care might be needed and what type of symptom relief you can provide at home.
