Salt Lake City IHC Health Plans is changing its name and logo. The locally-based insurer will now be called SelectHealth.

SelectHealth will still be a part of Intermountain Healthcare and will continue to work with Intermountain's hospitals and clinics to help people stay well and healthy. The name and logo change will be phased in over the next few months.

People with coverage through SelectHealth will receive a new insurance card in the mail within a few weeks. There will be no change to their benefits or coverage.

"Two years ago we initiated an extensive research process," said SelectHealth Vice President Jerry Edgington. "The research showed that many people were confusing Intermountain Healthcare, which helps patients at community-owned hospitals and clinics in Utah, with IHC Health Plans. In fact, a significant portion of the general public incorrectly thought Intermountain Healthcare was primarily an insurance company. This name change will bring clarity to the distinct role each part of Intermountain Healthcare plays in keeping Utahns healthy."

In conjunction with the new name, SelectHealth is announcing expanded customer service, extending telephone service hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each weekday. Beginning in May, Saturday hours 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be added.

Members will also have a new website where they can get information about their insurance benefits, and review the status of their insurance claims: Many other leading health organizations locally and nationally have different names for their hospitals and health insurance plans. For example, in Utah, University Healthcare named its insurance plan "Healthy U." And Sentara Healthcare in Virginia, one of the nation's top ranked health systems, named its health insurance plan OptimaHealth.

SelectHealth is one of Utah's leading insurers, providing coverage to 383,000 (15 percent) of Utah's 2.5 million residents. Other large national insurers in Utah include Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Altius, Cigna, and Aetna, as well as local companies such as Educator's Mutual, DMBA, and Public Employees Health Program.
