Salt Lake City Intermountain Healthcare President and CEO William H. (Bill) Nelson (62) has announced that he plans to retire in early 2009. Nelson has served in leadership positions at Intermountain for more than three decades. Charles W. Sorenson, Jr., MD, Intermountain's executive vice president and chief operations officer, will succeed Nelson as president and CEO.

"Bill will continue to be a strong leader throughout this year, while Charles will begin to assume more responsibility as the year progresses," says Kem Gardner, chairman of Intermountain's board of trustees. "Our focus remains the same: working together to provide great care-clinically, operationally, and in terms of service to our patients and our community."

Nelson began his relationship with Intermountain Healthcare in 1975 when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated its 15 hospitals to communities in Utah and Idaho and asked Intermountain to own and operate them. At the time, Nelson was a healthcare consultant at the accounting firm of Ernst and Young. He helped establish Intermountain as a secular, nonprofit healthcare system. He was subsequently hired as the new organization's chief financial officer.

Nelson served as chief financial officer until 1995, when he was promoted to become Intermountain's chief operations officer. He was appointed president and CEO in 1999. Intermountain has repeatedly been recognized as one of the nation's leading healthcare organizations. Intermountain is widely regarded as an innovator in using quality improvement techniques and information technology to continually improve care while simultaneously lowering costs. It is also noted for its integrated approach to care, in which hospitals, physicians and health plans collaborate and coordinate services.

Sorenson is a board-certified urologic surgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He joined Intermountain's senior management team in 1998. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the Utah Medical Association, and he served as president of LDS Hospital's medical staff. He is also an adjunct associate professor of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
