Charitable Benefits
Intermountain Healthcare's total benefit to the communities it serves is estimated at more than $320 million for 2004, according to standards established by the Utah State Tax Commission.
The total benefit encompasses various contributions to the community, including:
- Charity care
In 2004, Intermountain provided approximately $67 million in assistance for more than 147,000 instances of people unable to pay – about $184,000 per day. Charity care does not include nearly $77 million in bad debt (people unwilling to pay) in 2004. - Clinics for underserved populations
Intermountain owns and manages four community clinics for the low-income, homeless, and uninsured populations. These clinics provided care in more than 15,000 cases in 2004.Intermountain also provides financial and volunteer support to independent medical clinics for the homeless and uninsured throughout the Intermountain region. These clinics also receive federal and state funding and provided care in more than 185,000 additional cases in 2004.
- Intermountain clinics include IHC Neighborhood Clinic, IHC Clinic at Lincoln Elementary School, IHC Clinic at Rose Park Elementary School and IHC Cache Valley Community Health Center.
- Clinics Intermountain supports, include: the 4th Street Clinic Wasatch Homeless Health Care, Cedar City Clinic, Central City Community Health Center, Midtown Community Health Center, Mountainlands Community Health Center, Northwest Community Health Center, Oquirrh View Community Health Center, Davis Volunteer Medical Center and Peoples' Health Center Mobile Clinic.
- Foundations
In 2004, two foundations funded by Intermountain provided about $2.7 million in financial support to community efforts. The IHC Community Care Foundation (an independent endowment funded by Intermountain) donated about $1.9 million in support of clinics for homeless and low-income populations. The IHC Foundation awarded about $800,000 for Intermountain school and community clinics and grants to community agencies.
