Intermountain Quality & Clinical Excellence
Commitment to Quality
In the health care field, Intermountain is internationally recognized for its clinical excellence and as a pioneer in the application of continuous quality improvement principles to the delivery of care.
Some examples of Intermountain's commitment to quality:
- A national model. Intermountain's approach to quality management has been accepted as a national model by the Hospital Research and Education Trust (HRET), the research affiliate of the American Hospital Association.
- Institute for Health Care Delivery Research. Under the direction of Brent C. James, MD, MStat, the Institute has trained thousands of Intermountain employees, as well as hundreds of physicians and other clinicians from across the United States and around the world, in the principles of health care quality improvement. The Institute has received worldwide recognition for its contributions to continually raising the standards of excellence in health care delivery. In 2005, Dr. James was elected a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit policy organization that has advocated for increased quality in the nation's health care system.
- Quality awards. Intermountain has received top national awards for providing quality healthcare, including: the NCQHC Quality Health Care Award, in 1996; and Intermountain is the only hospital system in Utah to win The Healthcare Forum/Witt Award: Commitment to Quality, in 1991.
Additional recognition for quality efforts:
- Intermountain named the nation's No. 1 integrated healthcare organization by Modern Healthcare magazine and the Verispan research firm, in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
- Top 100 Hospitals. The Solucient research firm has consistently named several Intermountain hospitals in its annual Top 100 list, compiled since 1993. Honorees include: LDS Hospital, Cottonwood Hospital, Alta View Hospital, Logan Regional Hospital, American Fork Hospital and Valley View Medical Center.
- A Wall Street Journal article recognized Intermountain's efforts to improve outcomes for heart attack patients. The Sept. 21, 2004 article described how discharge practices developed by Intermountain researchers significantly improved readmission and mortality rates for more than 31,000 patients. The article was one of nearly 2,500 positive stories published about Intermountain during 2004, including prominent coverage in other national media such as U.S. News & World Report, Managed Care magazine, and the New York Times.
- NCQA recognition. The National Committee for Quality Assurance, an independent, not-for-profit standards group for the health insurance industry, rated Intermountain as a top five regional health plan. SelectHealth was the first commercial health plan in Utah to receive "Excellent" Accreditation status by NCQA.
