STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY & MEDICINE
  1. An interactive website. A growing number of patients at participating Intermountain clinics can access personal health information online, through secure access in dynamic web applications. My PERSONAL INFO allows patients to view their electronic medical record for lab test results, x-ray results, medications list and health problems and allergy lists. In addition, patients can contact their physician offices through secure portal messaging with non-urgent requests, such as scheduling an appointment, getting a prescription renewed, requesting a referral, and asking for information about a recent visit. SelectHealth members can also use My PERSONAL INFO to check coverage details, such as real-time claims status, as well as year-to-date copayment, deductibles and coinsurance totals.
  2. Advanced clinical practice tools help Intermountian physicians improve patient care. The Intermountain Medical Group is developing and installing several software systems designed to provide better practice management and patient care tools for physicians and other clinicians.
    Examples include:
    • Clinical Workstation gives Intermountain clinicians instant access to electronic patient records at various service points in the Intermountain system. The system collects aggregate data used by physicians in quality improvement studies. Shared electronic medical records have been especially beneficial when primary and secondary specialists need to collaborate.
    • IDX, which assists physician office staffs in scheduling and patient account management, averages approximately 1,100 daily users. It links together all patient medical information and provides suggestions and reminders to doctors and nurses as they provide care.
  3. Bedside computers at major facilities have contributed to significant improvements in patient care, such as decreases in post-operative infections, decreases in adverse drug interactions and decreases in the prevalence of antibiotic resistant pathogens – all major issues for hospitals throughout the United States.
  4. Robotic Pharmacy System. ROBOT-Rx is a state-of-the-art robot which allows pharmacies at some Intermountain hospitals to decrease the number of medication-related errors. The robot retrieves medication entered into a computer by a pharmacist and then packages and barcodes it.
  5. PET Scanner. Intermountain helped buy the region's first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner for the community. This powerful device shows cancer cells at a new level of detail and can show how well they are responding to treatment.
  6. DexaScan. This imaging machine evaluates bone density to check for osteoporosis and several other medical conditions, using computer-aided technology to quickly take an image of a patient's hip, spine, and forearm and produce a status report. The procedure is easy and non-invasive for patients and allows physicians to quickly prescribe diet, lifestyle, or medication changes to improve bone density.
While all innovations are not available at all Intermountain facilities, new technology is helping caregivers improve medical outcomes and the delivery of care.
