If cancer seems to run in your family, you may have an increased risk of cancer. Genetic counselors can help to determine if there is a genetic reason for occurrences of cancer in a family.

During a visit with a genetic counselor you will be asked several questions, including especially about your family history. He or she can discuss the benefits and limitations of seeking genetic testing, expectations for the future and whether you are at-risk of passing cancer to your children.

Contact a genetic counselor if you have any of the following:
  • More than one family member with breast cancer
  • Have any close family member with ovarian cancer, or if a male in your family has breast cancer
  • Many family members with colon cancer
  • Cancer that developed at a young age
  • Combinations of different cancer types in the family
