Medical Coding

Health Information Professional Job Description
Health Information Technicians record the information health care personnel observe when they treat a patient, including how the patient is treated medically. This record includes information that the patient provides concerning their symptoms and medical history, the results of examinations, reports of x-rays, laboratory tests, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Technicians assign the patient to one of several hundred "diagnosis-related groups" (DRG). The DRG determines the amount the hospital will be reimbursed if the patient is covered by an insurance program. Technicians who specialize in coding are called health information coders, medical record coders, coder/abstractors, or coding specialists.

  • Full-time salary at entry level for a HIS Coding Specialist is approximately $29,000/ yr.
  • Employment opportunities for HIS are expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through the year 2010.
Education
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - successful completion of an approved baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program and pass a national RHIA certification exam.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - Associates Degree in an approved health information technology program and pass a national certification exam.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - pass a national coding exam measuring medical terminology, disease processes, pharmacology, and the application of ICD-9-CM and CPT surgery coding systems.
  • Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) - pass a national coding exam measuring medical terminology, disease processes, pharmacology and the application of ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA) - pass a national coding exam measuring understanding of entry-level coding applications including medical terminology, disease processes, pharmacology and ICD-9-CM and CPT medical record coding.
