Job Description
Imaging technology professionals work in various settings, such as: hospitals, health care facilities, physician offices, research centers, industrial plants and mobile imaging companies. Opportunities also exist for individuals to specialize in education.
- Radiologic Technologist: uses high tech equipment to produce traditional diagnostic x-rays.
- Sonographer: uses high tech computers and sound waves to produce anatomy images. Three specialty areas include:
- General Ultrasound
- Echocardiography
- Vascular Technology
- Cardiovascular Technologist: uses imaging techniques to guide catheters etc. in the body.
- Radiation Therapist/Dosimetrist: delivers high doses of radiation to treat diseases.
- Nuclear Medicine Technologist: uses radioisotopes and gamma cameras to produce diagnostic images.
- Special Procedure Technologist: uses CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance) to produce diagnostic images.
- Angiography Technologist: uses digital x-rays to perform invasive procedures.
- Mammography Technologist: uses x-ray equipment in breast imaging to detect cancer.
Earnings & Employment Outlook
- Full-time salary at entry level for a Radiologic Tech is approximately $34,000/yr.
- Employment opportunities for Imaging are expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2010.
Education
- An Associates of Applied Science Degree or certificate in Radiography is required to work as a Radiologic Tech.
- A Bachelors Degree is usually preferred to work in the specialty areas.
- State licensure and/or national registry, as required, depending on the area of emphasis.
