Job Description
Laboratory professionals collect and process biological specimens for analysis in the detection and treatment of disease.
- Clinical Lab Assistant - tracks and prepares samples for the Medical Technologists.
- Phlebotomist - collects blood samples for analysis.
- Medical Lab Technologist - collects and processes specimens.
- Histology Technician - prepares microscopic slides for pathology testing.
- Pathology Technician - provides support for Anatomic Pathology Labs.
- Medical Technologist - conducts lab testing for detection and treatment of disease.
- Cytologist - conducts lab tests for evaluation of malignancy and disease.
Earnings & Employment Outlook
- Full-time salary at entry level for a Medical Technologist is approximately $36,000/yr.
- Employment opportunities for Laboratory are expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through the year 2010.
Education
- Clinical Lab Assistant and Phlebotomist - require a high school diploma or equivalent. A Phlebotomist must also complete a Phlebotomy training course.
- Medical Laboratory Technologists require an Associates Degree.
- Medical Technologists require a Bachelors Degree.
- Cytologists must complete a Bachelors Degree which specialty in cytology.
- Most positions require national certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the equivalent.
