Job Description
Pharmacists provide comprehensive pharmacy services for inpatients, outpatients, hospital staff and physicians, to ensure smooth, consistent operation, and compliance with policies and procedures in accordance with corporate guidelines and governmental regulatory agencies.
Pharmacists instruct patients and their families in the proper use of medications. Some pharmacists are involved in medication research to improve patient outcomes. Pharmacists are employed in hospitals, outpatient facilities, Intermountain Health Plans and Home Care.

- Full-time salary at entry level for a Pharmacist is approximately $85,000/yr.
- Employment opportunities for Pharmacists are expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, through the year 2010.
Education
- To be accepted to the pharmacy program at the University of Utah, the student must pass the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).
- 50 students are accepted each cycle; acceptance ratio is 1:3.
- As of 2002, all students will be required to obtain a Pharm.D.
- Pharmacy prerequisites include: anatomy, physiology, microbiology, general and organic chemistry, calculus, and physics.
- Average length of program including clinical experience is 2 years in pre-pharmacy and 4 years professional (6 years total). This equates to 200 semester hours.
Programs offered in Utah
- Pharmacy Tech programs are offered at: applied technology centers, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Dixie Advanced Training Center, and Utah Valley State College.
- The Pharm.D. Degree is offered at the University of Utah.
