Physical Therapy

Job Description
Physical therapists provide quality, cost effective physical therapy services, including: consultation evaluation and ongoing treatments as well as education to patients and their families. All therapy services are provided in accordance with the state licensure laws, professional standards and ethics, and within the guidelines of the departmental and facility standards, policies and procedures.

Earnings & Employment Outlook
  • Full-time salary at entry level for a Physical Therapist is approximately $45,000/yr.
  • Employment opportunities for Physical Therapists are expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through the year 2010.
Education
  • To be accepted to the PT program at the University of Utah, the student must complete all of the admission requirements.

    These include complete application with:
    • Official transcripts
    • Prerequisite course work of "C" or better
    • Prerequisite GPA minimum of 3.0 overall
    • Statement of Purpose
    • Three (3) letters of recommendation
    • Group & individual interview for finalists
  • 36 students are accepted each cycle; acceptance ratio is 1:8.
  • 2003 is the final year a student can complete the program at a Masters level (MPT).
  • As of 2004, all students will be required to obtain a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT).

    Physical therapy prerequisites include:
    • Biological Sciences (10 semester hours
    • General Biology, Anatomy, Physiology), Physics (8 sem/hrs)
    • Chemistry (8 sem/hrs; Organic or inorganic)
    • Advanced first aid (3 sem/hrs)
    • Psychology (7 sem/hrs; General & Abnormal)
    • Communications (6 sem/hrs; Basic Writing, Technical Writing)
    • Math (5 sem/hrs; Trig or Calculus, and Statistics)
  • Length of program including clinical experience is 3 years after acceptance to PT School. (Equates to 120-123 semester hours).
Programs offered in Utah
  • The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree is offered at the University of Utah.
